The placenta is an incredible organ! For more than seven months it acts as filter, barrier, and connection for your baby. It delivers oxygen to your baby’s blood, produces hormones to help your pregnancy progress, and provides your baby with all they need to grow!

Throughout history the placenta has been honored in different ways all around the world. Disposing of it as medical waste has become normal, but many parents have been going back to old practices. If you’d like to honor yours, here are some ideas!

bury it.

In many cultures, the placenta is buried. Some people plant a tree or shrub on top of it, because it fertilizes and makes a visual memory for years to come.

Ukrainian tradition says it must not be buried in a doorway or it may inhibit the mother’s future fertility. In Sudan, it is buried in a place that represents the hopes and dreams the parents have for their child. If burying your placenta interests you, find a location that fits your own family’s values and beliefs.

have it made into capsules for postpartum wellness.

Most of the families who bring their placenta home from the hospital consume it in various ways. We offer the service of professional encapsulation to Treasure Coast families who would like to experience the anecdotal benefits of consuming their placenta. It is prepared by being safely processed, dried at OSHA regulated temperatures, and finely ground into a powder before being put into capsules and packaged for our clients in a beautiful cobalt blue glass jar.

The anecdotal benefits include:

  • A decrease in depressive moods
  • Increase of the hormone CRH, which reduces stress
  • Lessened postpartum bleeding and more rapid healing
  • Replenished nutrients and iron levels in the blood
  • Improved bonding between mother and child

enjoy it in a smoothie.

Celebrities and regular moms alike are talking about the benefits of sipping a placenta smoothie. By blending a small piece of raw or dried placenta with fruit, yogurt, or other ingredients, it is thought you can enjoy similar benefits to placenta encapsulation. Bottoms up!

have a lotus birth.

A significant part of the lotus birth protocol involves allowing the placenta to remain attached to the baby for an extended period of time. It is often packed with salt and herbs to prevent spoilage, and is wrapped up with the baby until it detaches. It can then be buried when it has detached from the baby.

People choose a lotus birth to recognize the connection baby and placenta have had, as well as maximize the benefits of placental blood transfer back to baby. Lotus birth is a popular practice in Bali and is even practiced in some Australian hospitals.

make a long-lasting tincture for wellness.

Many people add a placenta tincture to their encapsulation package. To make the tincture, a small amount of placenta is added to high-quality alcohol and infused for several weeks. Tinctures are thought to last indefinitely and is convenient to ingest—just add a few drops to tea or juice or take directly.  Tinctures are a wonderful way to utilize the anecdotal benefits for many years.

create an art print.

Placenta art prints are beautiful and made by creating imprints of your placenta on paper. Art prints are made using food safe colors and protected with a barrier prior to encapsulation. Prints can be provided without encapsulation or tinctures. We offer a package at Bell House Birth Services that includes both Art Prints and Belly Casting.
